Chapter 2: What the Envelope Knew

Clare's fingers hovered over the envelope.
"Open it," Eleanor said quietly.
"You have a right to know."
Inside were two documents.
The first was a legal agreement — signed by Harrison, witnessed by his attorney — requiring Eleanor to make no claim on the Mercer estate and to have no contact with any Mercer family member.
Ever.
In exchange: a single payment of forty thousand dollars.
"He paid you to disappear," Clare said.
"He paid me to stop existing." Eleanor's voice didn't waver.
"Our father left the company to both of us.
Equal shares.
Harrison had his attorney reframe the will within a week of the funeral.
He told me to sign or he would make sure I couldn't prove the relationship at all."
Clare looked at the second document.
A DNA result.
Eleanor Parker.
William Mercer.
Probability of half-sibling relationship: 99.97%.
"He knew this existed," Clare said.
"He was in the room when the test was done."
Clare's hands were shaking now.
"What's the brass key for?"
Eleanor went very still.
"That," she said carefully, "is the part Harrison is most afraid of."
She reached beneath the counter and placed a small wooden plaque on the surface.
On it, a single address — a storage unit in Burlington, Vermont.
"Our father left something there.
Something he never told Harrison about." She looked at Clare's belly.
"Something that belongs to that child."
Clare's phone lit up on the counter.
Harrison's name filled the screen.
