Chapter 2: The Phone That Was Already Recording

Melissa stood very still for a moment.
Then she laughed.
"Frozen doesn't mean finished," she said.
"Grant's name is on that trust too.
We'll have it unfrozen by Wednesday."
I looked at my husband.
"Is that what you want?"
He didn't answer.
He was staring at the page I had placed in front of him — the one with his signature on a trustee-change request dated six weeks ago.
Two weeks before Melissa had even pretended to propose the investment idea to me.
"You started this before she ever sat down at my table," I said.
Grant finally spoke.
"You were going to cut me out after the baby came.
Melissa told me—"
"Melissa told you," I repeated.
He stopped.
Melissa's eyes moved to the folder still in my hands.
I hadn't shown her everything in it yet.
She didn't know about the second bank.
She didn't know what my father's attorney had quietly set up three months before he passed — a secondary protected account that required both my signature and a court order to touch.
She didn't know about the recorded phone call either.
My phone was already on the table, face down.
It had been recording since before they walked in.
Then the front door opened.
