Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Counter

The bank manager printed the transfer records without me even asking.

He slid them across the desk quietly, like he already felt sorry for me.

I stared at the date.

The transfer had gone through at 11:42 PM — three weeks ago.

The exact same night my mother was rushed to the emergency room and I stayed at the hospital until sunrise.

Brandon had known I wouldn't be home.

He had planned it around my mother's collapse.

I drove back to the apartment.

I didn't care anymore about the deed or the police.

I needed to look him in the eye.

Brandon opened the door like I was a stranger.

"You need to call before you come now, Chloe."

"You used my mother's medical emergency to empty our account."

He didn't even flinch.

"Prove it."

Behind him, Brenda appeared in the hallway.

She was already unpacking boxes.

Making herself at home.

In my home.

"She's not on the lease anymore, Brandon.

You don't have to speak to her."

I looked past them both.

And that's when I saw it.

On the kitchen counter.

A manila envelope with a law firm's name on it.

Not a local firm.

One I recognized.

The same firm that had handled my father's estate three years ago.

My hands went cold.

What's inside that envelope — and why does it connect to Chloe's father?
