Chapter 2: What Paulina Already Knew

Marisol didn't speak for a long moment.
Then, barely above a whisper, she said, "I was going to tell you.
I swear I was going to tell you."
I asked her when.
She couldn't answer.
Valentina had fallen asleep against her mother's shoulder, still clutching the golden button in her small fist.
I looked at that little hand and felt something break open inside my chest.
"How long have you known for certain?" I asked.
Marisol's voice cracked.
"Since before she was born."
I had to step back.
Four years.
She had worked in my house for four years, walked past me every single morning, handed me my coffee, said good morning, and never once said a word.
Then I heard footsteps on the stairs.
Paulina had not gone to the bedroom.
She had been standing at the top of the staircase the whole time, listening.
When I looked up at her, her expression wasn't shock.
It wasn't hurt.
It was something colder than that.
"I already knew," she said quietly.
"I've known for months.
That's exactly why they needed to go."
The hallway went completely still.
Marisol pulled Valentina closer.
I couldn't move.
Because if Paulina had known for months and said nothing — then the question was no longer just about Marisol's secret.
The question was what Paulina had been planning to do about it.
