Chapter 2: What Paulina Already Knew

Part 2 ⬇️
Marisol didn't speak for a long time.
When she finally opened her eyes, they were full of tears she was refusing to let fall.
"I was going to tell you," she whispered.
"I tried.
Twice."
"When?" I asked.
She looked down at Valentina, who had pressed her face against her mother's side, still holding the rabbit, still holding the button.
"The first time was the night you got engaged," Marisol said quietly.
"I came to your study.
The door was open.
You were laughing with Paulina and you looked so happy." She stopped.
"I turned around and walked back to my room."
I didn't know what to say.
"The second time," she continued, "Paulina saw me waiting outside your office.
She told me if I ever tried to speak to you privately again, she would have me removed from the country."
The air went out of me.
"She knew?" I asked.
Marisol's silence was the only answer I needed.
I heard footsteps on the staircase behind me.
Paulina had come back down.
Her expression was no longer pale.
It was something else entirely — controlled, calculating, and cold in a way I had never seen before.
"You should be careful," she said softly, "about what you think you know."
She was looking at Valentina when she said it.
