Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 ⬇️

Ethan didn't move.

He just stood there, staring at Noah in his father's arms.

The restaurant noise slowly returned around him — glasses, murmurs, the pianist starting again — but Ethan heard none of it.

I watched his face do something I had never seen it do before.

It came apart.

"Dad."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Richard looked up from Noah.

His expression was calm.

Decided.

"Sit down, Ethan."

"What is this?"

"I said sit down."

Noah looked between them, sensing something he couldn't name.

He pressed closer to Richard.

Ethan turned to me.

The anger was gone.

What replaced it was worse.

"How old is he?"

I didn't answer.

"How.

Old."

"Six," I said quietly.

I watched him count backward.

Watched the number land.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Ethan, this is exactly what she wants — "

"Don't." He said it without looking at her.

Richard reached into his jacket and placed something on the table between us.

An envelope.

Old.

Worn at the corners.

My handwriting on the front.

ETHAN.

"There are eight more where that came from," Richard said.

"She sent them.

You never received a single one."

Ethan's hand moved toward the envelope.

Then Victoria's phone lit up on the table.

She grabbed it before anyone else could see the screen.

But I saw the name.

And my bl00d went cold.
