Chapter 2: What the Card Already Knew

Claire didn't move.
She stood there holding the black card, mud still dripping from Noah's hair, and the entire patio went quiet.
Kevin's laugh died first.
"Give that back," he said.
His voice had dropped.
"That's mine."
"Is it?" Claire said softly.
She turned the card over once.
Then she looked at the gifts piled around Madison.
The new laptop.
The designer bag.
The gold bracelet on a twelve-year-old's wrist.
"How long?" Claire asked.
Richard stepped forward.
"Claire, you need to calm down right now—"
"How long, Dad?"
Neither of them answered.
Noah was still crying quietly behind her.
A guest near the garden gate had stopped talking and was watching.
Then another.
Then the whole yard.
Claire opened her phone.
She pulled up a banking screen and held it so Kevin could see the transaction history.
His face changed.
"You can see every transfer," she said.
"Every single one.
Going back four years."
Kevin's jaw tightened.
"You don't understand what that account is—"
"I built that account," Claire said.
"I built everything you've been spending."
Then Richard said something low, almost under his breath — something meant only for Kevin.
But Claire heard it.
And the way her expression shifted made two guests near the door quietly pick up their bags and leave.
