Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Room

My father said twelve minutes.
They arrived in nine.
The ballroom doors opened without a knock.
Four men in dark suits walked in first.
Then two women carrying folders.
Then a man I recognized as the venue's head of security, moving fast, looking like he wished he were somewhere else.
And then my father stepped through the door.
He didn't rush.
He never rushed.
The room shifted the moment people saw him.
A few guests near the entrance stepped back without being asked.
One of the photographers lowered his camera slowly, then didn't raise it again.
Eleanor was mid-sentence when she stopped talking.
Chloe turned.
Her smile didn't disappear all at once.
It faded in stages, the way a light dims before it goes out completely.
My father walked straight to me.
He looked at my torn dress once.
Then he looked at Dominic.
He said nothing to Dominic.
That was worse than anything he could have said.
One of the women with folders approached the head of security and handed him a single sheet of paper.
He read it.
His face went pale.
"Sir," he said quietly, turning toward Chloe's new husband.
"We need to pull the camera footage.
Now."
Chloe's voice came out smaller than I had ever heard it.
"Who…
who is he?"
My father finally looked at her.
"I own this building."
Then he added, almost gently—
"And I've owned it for twenty-two years."
Amanda, still gripping her silver purse near the flower arrangement, took one step toward the exit.
One of the men in dark suits moved to block her path without a word.

What the cameras captured next — and what was inside Amanda's purse — exposed a secret that went far deeper than a missing ring.
