Chapter 1: The Garage He Never Expected Me to Enter

For years, my husband thought my poor eyesight kept his secret safe — then I came home from laser eye surgery, stepped into the garage, and screamed, "This can't be real!"
Brian and I had been married for eleven years.
When we got married, there was nothing wrong with my vision.
But about a year later, I was diagnosed with a rare eye disease that gradually took my sight away.
It started with blurry signs and faces I couldn't recognize from far away.
Then unfamiliar places became difficult to navigate.
Within a few years, I could barely see anything beyond light and large shapes.
I started using a white cane outside, and Brian became the person I depended on most.
He drove me everywhere and took care of anything that required good eyesight.
That included the garage.
Since I couldn't drive anymore, I almost never went in there.
Brian kept his tools, car supplies, and storage boxes inside, and whenever I needed something, he'd bring it to me.
Doctors had always told me my eyesight couldn't be restored.
Then, a month ago, I was offered an experimental laser treatment through a clinical program.
There were no guarantees.
Brian thought I was setting myself up for disappointment.
But when he left for a week-long business trip, I decided to try it anyway.
And somehow, it worked.
My vision was blurry at first, but it improved every day.
By the time I came home, I could actually see again.
A few days later, I remembered our Christmas lights were stored in the garage.
I hadn't truly seen them glow in years, and suddenly I desperately wanted to.
Brian was still away, so for the first time in ages, I went into the garage myself.
I opened the door and looked around.
Then I froze.

My hands started shaking, and then I screamed,
"This can't be real!"
