Chapter 2: There's More. Check Records.

Part 2 ⬇️
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
I picked the phone back up and forced myself to watch it again.
The timestamp in the corner read three days earlier — the night I was unconscious.
Ryan was in the NICU.
Alone.
Standing over one of the incubators.
He wasn't crying.
He wasn't praying.
He was on the phone, speaking in a low, flat voice I had never heard from him before.
"It has to be that one," he said.
"Not the other."
Then he reached inside.
The video cut off.
I sat there unable to breathe.
The nurse slipped back into the room twenty minutes later, pretending to check the monitor.
She didn't look at Ryan.
She looked at me.
One small nod.
She had seen everything.
I looked down at my son in my arms — my living son — and something cold moved through me.
Which one had Ryan wanted to survive?
And why?
Then Ryan walked back through the door, coffee in hand, smiling like nothing in the world was wrong.
"How are my two favorite people?"
I smiled back.
Because the nurse was right.
He couldn't know that I knew.
Not yet.
That night, after Ryan fell asleep in the chair beside me, my phone lit up with a second message from the nurse.
Four words.
*There's more.
Check records.*
