Chapter 2: The Look on Her Face

Michael called on the third morning.

I let it ring.

He called again.

Then again.

On the fourth try, I picked up.

"Dad." His voice was tight.

"My key card stopped working at the office.

And the gate code at the house isn't going through."

"I know."

Silence.

"What do you mean, you know?"

"I changed them."

"You— why?

Dad, what's going on?"

I didn't answer that.

I asked him something instead.

"Michael.

When your mother came home from your wedding with bruises on her arm, what did you think happened to her?"

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"She said she fell."

"And you believed that."

"Dad, she—"

"I have the footage, Michael."

The line went completely quiet.

When he spoke again, his voice had changed.

Smaller.

Careful.

"That's…

it wasn't what it looked like.

Cassandra was upset and I was just trying to—"

"You grabbed your mother's arm.

You shoved her into a wall.

Then you walked back to your reception."

Nothing.

"She was still on the floor when you left."

I heard him exhale.

Then, very quietly, he said:

"Is she there?

Can I talk to her?"

I looked across the room at Ellen.

She was sitting at the kitchen table, both hands wrapped around her coffee cup, watching me.

She had heard everything.

And the look on her face was not what I expected.
