Chapter 2: The Name at the Bottom of the Page

Part 2 ⬇️

Nathan's hands were shaking as he opened the envelope.

Victoria hadn't moved.

She was watching him from across the kitchen, her face unreadable.

Lily had buried her face against Grace's shoulder.

The first page was a letter.

His father's handwriting.

Nathan read the opening line once.

Then again.

*"If you are reading this, then Grace found a way back.

That means they failed.

And that means you need to know what I did."*

Nathan looked up slowly.

Victoria's expression shifted — just slightly.

Just enough.

"You knew," Nathan said.

"You knew what was in here."

"Nathan, whatever your father wrote—"

"You knew." His voice was quiet.

Controlled.

"That's why you came here tonight.

That's why Grace had to be—" He stopped.

"How long have you known?"

Victoria said nothing.

Grace spoke from the floor, her voice barely above a whisper.

"She's known since before you proposed, Nathan.

Her father told her everything.

The arrangement.

The money.

All of it."

The room went completely still.

Then Nathan turned to the second page.

And the name written at the bottom made his attorney take one step back.

Because it wasn't his father's name.

It was someone still very much alive.
