Chapter 1: The Box He Left Behind

For 11 years, I drove my elderly veteran neighbor to church every Sunday — after his funeral, a soldier came to my door, handed me his old military box, and said, "He wanted you to open this alone."

Eleven years ago, I noticed my elderly neighbor, Adriel, standing at a bus stop in his Sunday suit during a downpour.

He was in his seventies, walked with a cane, and lived alone next door.

I knew he'd served in the military, but Adriel was so quiet and modest that we'd never exchanged more than a few polite words.

I pulled over and offered him a ride.

"Only if you're going my way," he said.

When he told me he was headed to church, I smiled.

I attended the same church, so we went together that morning.

The following Sunday, I knocked on his door, and somehow, that became our tradition.

Every Sunday, we'd go to church together, then have coffee at his house or mine afterward.

At first, I did most of the talking, but slowly, Adriel opened up.

He started telling me stories, making quiet jokes, and smiling whenever he saw me coming.

Over the years, we grew close in that quiet, neighborly way.

I'd bring him dinner, he'd leave vegetables from his garden on my porch, and as he got older, I helped with groceries and drove him to appointments.

Three weeks ago, Adriel passed away at eighty-four.

His funeral was small, and saying goodbye to someone who'd quietly become such an important part of my life was harder than I'd expected.

A few days later, someone knocked on my door.

A uniformed soldier stood outside holding an old, worn military box I immediately recognized.

For years, it had sat on a shelf in Adriel's living room, but he'd never told me what was inside.

"You must be the neighbor who drove Adriel to church every Sunday."

I nodded, and he handed me the box.

"He left specific instructions that this should go to you."

Then he looked at me steadily.

"He wanted you to open this alone."
