Chapter 2: The Signature That Changed Everything

The man I called was my former senior partner, Robert Hale.
He picked up on the second ring.
"Robert," I said, "I need you to start the clock."
He didn't ask questions.
He never did.
"I'll have someone at the hospital within the hour," he said.
I hung up just as Vivian's phone buzzed.
She glanced at the screen and something shifted in her expression — not guilt, but calculation.
"Daniel's landing soon," she said carefully.
"Whatever you think you're doing, Grace, stop now.
You don't want this to get ugly."
"It's already ugly, Vivian.
I just wasn't the one who made it that way."
She stepped closer and lowered her voice to almost nothing.
"There are things about that business you don't know.
Things that could hurt you too if you start pulling at threads."
I looked at her and felt nothing except cold, focused certainty.
"Then I suppose we'll find out together."
She left without another word.
Twenty minutes later, a nurse appeared in my doorway holding a folded piece of paper.
"A gentleman in the lobby asked me to give you this," she said quietly.
I opened it.
It was a single printed page — a wire transfer record dated three days before Noah was born.
The amount was $340,000.
The recipient account belonged to Celeste Morgan.
And the signature authorizing it was not Daniel's.
It was Vivian's.
