Chapter 2: The Key She Was Never Supposed to Find

The guests filed out in silence.
Vivienne didn't move.
"You're making a scene," she said, her voice low and controlled.
"Sit down, Vivienne."
"Damian—"
"Sit.
Down."
She sat.
Rosie was still in the doorway.
I walked over and crouched to her level.
"Did anyone come to your mommy's room after she got sick?"
Rosie thought for a moment.
Then she nodded.
"The pretty lady.
She came two times."
I didn't look up at Vivienne.
I didn't need to.
"Did the pretty lady take anything?"
Rosie pointed at Vivienne's hand.
"The box.
She took the wood box."
I stood slowly.
Marco stepped forward and placed something on the table.
A small evidence bag.
Inside it was a folded piece of paper his team had found twenty minutes earlier during a routine sweep of the guest coatroom.
It was a receipt.
An estate sale receipt — dated four days after Sofia's funeral.
Vivienne's name was on it.
But the item listed wasn't a ring.
It was a key.
I looked at Vivienne.
For the first time all evening, her composure cracked.
"Where does that key go, Vivienne?"
She said nothing.
But her eyes moved — just for a second — toward the east wing of the house.
The wing that had been locked since Sofia d*ed.
