Chapter 2: What She Carried for Him

Part 2 ⬇️

The corridor went completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

We just stood there looking at this nine-year-old girl standing in front of her father like she was shielding him from us.

He put his hand on her shoulder.

His jaw was tight.

His eyes were wet.

One of the mothers started to say something — "We didn't mean—" — but Goldie didn't even look at her.

She was looking at her dad.

"Tell them," she said quietly.

"You can tell them."

He shook his head.

"Not here, sweetheart."

"Then I will."

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he nodded once.

Goldie turned back to us.

Her voice didn't shake at all.

"My mum grew it.

She said she wanted it long enough to braid when I was older.

She d*ed before she could."

Not one person breathed.

"Dad learned how to braid from her videos.

She recorded them before she got too sick.

He watches them every time."

She looked at the mother who had spoken first.

"Seventeen was how old Mum was when Dad first did her hair.

That's why we're waiting."

Then she took her father's hand and walked toward the hall.

He didn't look back at any of us.

But I saw his shoulders shaking.

And I saw something else — something none of us expected.

Another parent near the door had gone completely white.

Someone who clearly already knew this story.

And the look on their face wasn't sadness.

It was guilt.

Who was that parent — and what did they know?
