Chapter 7: The Second Name

Carver had a partner.

Vincent laid it out at the kitchen table while Sarah stood with her arms crossed and Adrian sat with his elbows on the table and Lily slept in the back bedroom with the door half-open and Mr.

Buttons tucked under her arm.

"Marco's documentation covers Carver completely," Vincent said.

"Payments, locations, dates.

Enough to hand to the authorities and walk away.

But when my people started pulling Carver's communication records, they found a second contact.

Someone Carver was reporting to inside the city — not Volkov's people directly.

A local intermediary."

"A name," Adrian said.

Vincent set a photograph on the table.

Sarah looked at it.

Her face went very still.

"You know him," Adrian said.

It wasn't a question.

"His name is Dennis Hale," Sarah said.

"He was my supervisor at the legal aid office.

Four years ago.

Before Lily." She picked up the photograph.

"I left that job when I found out I was pregnant.

I didn't want any connection between my old professional life and — this." She set the photograph down.

"He knew where I lived then.

I moved twice after that.

How does he have my current address?"

"He doesn't," Vincent said.

"He had your daycare.

Carver pulled the registration records, but Hale is the one who told Carver which daycare to look at.

He knew Lily existed.

He knew her first name and approximate age."

"How?"

"We think he's been maintaining a passive watch on you since you left the legal aid office.

Not active surveillance — just periodic checks.

Public records, social media from people you know, that kind of thing." Vincent paused.

"He sold what he had to Carver eight months ago, when Volkov's people started looking for Adrian's vulnerabilities.

Hale didn't know the full picture.

He just knew you had a young daughter and that you'd been careful about staying off the grid, which made you interesting."

"He sold my daughter," Sarah said.

Her voice was completely flat.

"He sold information about your daughter," Vincent said carefully.

"He may not have understood exactly what Volkov intended to do with it."

"I don't care what he understood." Sarah looked at Adrian.

"I want him handled."

"He will be," Adrian said.

"I mean legally.

I mean I want him arrested, charged, and I want to be the one who gives a statement." She held Adrian's gaze.

"I'm not asking you to handle it the other way.

I'm asking you to help me do it the right way."

Adrian looked at her for a long moment.

"All right," he said.

"I have a contact," Vincent said.

"Federal level.

Someone who has been building a case against Volkov's network for eighteen months.

If we hand them Carver, Hale, and Marco's full documentation, they can move on all three simultaneously — Carver, Hale, and Volkov's local operation." He paused.

"It means giving up control of the timeline.

It means trusting the process."

"It also means Volkov's people stop having a reason to look for Lily," Sarah said.

"Yes.

If the network is dismantled, the leverage disappears."

Adrian was quiet for a moment.

Then: "Make the call, Vincent."

"There's one more thing." Vincent's voice dropped slightly.

"My federal contact is going to ask about Adrian.

His role, his organization, his connection to Volkov.

They're not going to take the package without asking."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"What does your contact need from me?" Adrian asked.

"Full cooperation.

Documentation of the Volkov conflict from our side.

And a conversation about — transitioning."

"Transitioning," Adrian repeated.

"Out," Vincent said simply.

"They want to know if you're serious about it.

Because if you are, there's a structure for that.

Cooperation in exchange for a clean exit.

It's been done before."

Adrian looked at the table.

Then he looked at the hallway, toward the back bedroom where Lily was sleeping.

"Set up the meeting," he said.

Vincent nodded.

He picked up his phone.

Sarah looked at Adrian across the table.

Something passed between them — not a resolution, not a forgiveness, not yet, but the first outline of one.

"She asked me this afternoon," Sarah said quietly, "if you were going to be there when she woke up."

"What did you tell her?"

"I told her to ask you herself."

Adrian stood up from the table.

He walked down the hallway.

He pushed the bedroom door open a little wider and stood in the doorway and looked at his daughter sleeping in the half-dark with her bear.

He was still standing there when Lily opened her eyes.

"You're still here," she said, not surprised, just confirming.

"I'm still here," he said.

May you like

She closed her eyes again.

"Okay," she said, and went back to sleep.
