Chapter 2: The Envelope

He reached into the pocket of his Superman cape and pulled out a small envelope.
Alice's eyes went wide.
"This came for you," he said.
"From a lot of people who wanted to be here today."
Alice looked at me again.
I shook my head.
I genuinely had no idea.
She opened it slowly, the way she does everything when she's trying to make a moment last.
Inside was a card.
But it wasn't just signed by the hospital staff.
There were names I didn't recognize.
Dozens of them.
Then a hundred.
Then more.
"We shared your story," her oncologist said quietly.
"We didn't expect this kind of response."
Alice turned the card over.
Her lips moved as she tried to read all the names.
Then she stopped.
Her finger landed on one line near the bottom.
She looked up at him.
"Is this real?"
He smiled.
"That part is why I said your mom doesn't know either."
I leaned over to see what she was pointing at.
And when I read it, my legs nearly gave out.
