Chapter 2: The Bracelet in the Bag

Security pulled Luke into the hallway, but I could still hear him through the door.

"I didn't switch anyone.

Eli is a child.

He doesn't know what he saw."

But Eli was standing right beside me, gripping my hand, and he wasn't shaking.

He was certain.

"I watched him, Sarah.

He picked up the pink blanket and put it on the other baby.

Then he looked around to see if anyone was watching."

Camille came back in with another nurse and a security supervisor.

She set a small clear bag on the edge of my bed.

Inside it was a hospital bracelet.

My name.

My room number.

But the ink on the baby's name had been smudged — deliberately, it looked like — and written over.

"We found this near the supply cart on the east corridor," the supervisor said quietly.

"Your husband had access to that corridor.

He helped install the system last month."

I couldn't breathe.

Then my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

A text from a number I didn't recognize.

*She's safe.

But you need to ask Luke about the woman in Room 14.*

I looked up.

Camille was already watching my face.

"Mrs.

Harmon," she said carefully.

"Room 14 was checked out this morning.

Two hours before you delivered."
