Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything

It took me eleven minutes to reach the safe.

Eleven minutes of dragging myself across freezing concrete, biting down on the pain, refusing to make a sound they could hear through the door.

My fingers found the dial.

I entered the combination.

The lock clicked open.

The backup phone had charge.

Enough.

I called Angela first.

She picked up on the second ring.

I told her everything.

She went quiet for three seconds — Angela never went quiet.

"Emily, do not sign anything.

Do you understand me?

Nothing."

"I'm locked in my own garage."

Another pause.

"I'm looking at the camera feed right now."

She had been monitoring it since I sent her access two weeks ago.

She had already seen Mark and Eleanor drag me across the floor.

She had already seen Eleanor take my prescription bottle.

"I'm calling the police and I'm sending you a screenshot of something I found this morning," she said.

"Emily — the trust documents Mark wanted you to sign?

They don't protect you.

They transfer everything.

Your company.

The property your grandmother left you.

All of it goes directly to Eleanor."

My hands went cold.

"He knew?"

"Emily." Angela's voice was steady.

"Mark drafted those documents himself."

I heard the door handle rattle from inside the house.

Someone was coming back.
