Chapter 2: The Document That Changed the Ground Beneath Their Feet

**Part 2**
The document was dated eighteen years ago.
My mother's signature was at the bottom.
So was my father's.
And so was the name of the Phoenix house — the one Gwendolyn had just told me to leave.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
My mother hadn't just lived in that house.
She had owned half of it.
And when she passed, her half didn't go to Samuel.
It went to me.
I had been the legal co-owner of that house since I was seven years old.
I sat at my kitchen island for a long time, just breathing.
Then my phone lit up.
It was Samuel.
I almost didn't answer.
But something made me pick up.
"Paige." His voice sounded different.
Quieter.
"Where did you go?"
"Home," I said.
Silence.
"I need you to come back.
There's something I should have told you a long time ago."
I looked down at the document still open on the counter.
"I already know, Dad."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Then, in the background, I heard Gwendolyn's voice sharp and rising — "Who are you calling?
Samuel, what is going on?"
He didn't answer her.
And that was the moment I understood.
He had always known.
He had just hoped I never would.
