Chapter 2: The Key Inside the Bear
The key was small.
Barely an inch long.
But Daniel stared at it like it was a weapon pointed at his chest.
Judge Whitaker held out her hand.
Lily walked forward and placed the key on the bench without hesitation.
Like she'd been waiting a long time to do exactly that.
"Where did you get this, sweetheart?" the judge asked gently.
Lily's voice didn't waver.
"Mommy gave it to me before she went away.
She said if anything bad happened, I had to find a judge."
Vanessa's hand gripped Daniel's arm.
"Daniel," she whispered.
"What is she talking about?"
He pulled free without looking at her.
Rachel leaned close to my ear.
"Did you know about her?"
I shook my head.
But the handwriting on that note suddenly made terrible sense.
*He gets mad when people ask about Mommy.*
Daniel's attorney was already on his feet.
"Your Honor, this child's presence here is highly irregular—"
"Sit down," Judge Whitaker said.
Quietly.
The kind of quiet that ends arguments.
She looked at Lily again.
"Where is your mommy now?"
Lily hugged the teddy bear tighter.
"She said she couldn't come back.
She said Daddy made sure of that."
The gallery erupted.
The bailiff raised his hand for order.
And Daniel, for the first time all morning, said nothing at all.
