Marcus didn't say another word.
He handed Lily to one of his men, wrapped a jacket around my shoulders, and walked me down the stairs himself.
Daniel was waiting on the lawn.
When he saw Marcus beside me, something shifted in his face.
Not relief.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
"Thank God you're safe." He stepped forward, arms open.
"I was looking everywhere for you."
Marcus stopped walking.
"Sir." His voice was quiet.
"The lock on that door was engaged from the outside."
Daniel blinked.
"It must have jammed in the heat."
"It didn't jam." Marcus held up the broken mechanism.
"Someone turned it."
The lawn went silent.
Guests stood in small clusters, still watching.
Vanessa hovered near the tree line, her silk dress catching the light.
Daniel looked at me.
His expression said one thing clearly.
*Don't.*
"Sweetheart," he said softly.
"You're in shock."
I looked at Lily, wrapped in a blanket on a stretcher, oxygen mask over her small face.
Then I looked back at my husband.
"Marcus," I said.
"Pull the security footage from the upstairs hallway."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"There is no footage up there," he said quickly.
"I had the cameras removed last month for the renovation."
Marcus looked at him for a long moment.
"Interesting thing to remember so fast."
