Chapter 2: The Eyes That Went Still

Alexander didn't go back through the ballroom doors.
He carried Sophia to a quiet corner of the service corridor, sat her on a clean linen cart, and pulled out his phone with shaking hands.
Three years of transfers.
Sixty months.
Three hundred thousand dollars.
All sent to an account Victoria had set up herself.
He opened his banking app and scrolled back through every transaction.
Same account number.
Every single month.
He had never once questioned it because his mother had told him to trust her.
He had trusted her.
"Daddy," Sophia said softly, watching his face.
"Are you okay?"
He couldn't answer.
He called the bank directly.
Kept his voice low and steady while Sophia sat beside him, still holding her little bag of bread.
The account had been emptied every month like clockwork.
Consistent withdrawals.
No transfers out to Lauren.
No school payments.
No medical records.
Nothing.
Just gone.
Alexander stood up slowly and straightened his jacket.
"Stay here," he told Sophia.
"Don't move."
He pushed open the door to the ballroom.
The music was still playing.
Guests were still laughing.
And at the center of it all, Victoria Sterling sat at the head table in her diamond necklace, smiling at the crowd like a queen.
She looked up the moment he walked in.
Her smile didn't disappear.
But her eyes did something Alexander had never seen before.
They went completely still.
