Chapter 2: The Paper She Was Never Supposed to Find

Mark tore the tape from Lucy's mouth.

She gasped and pulled her knees to her chest.

"Seven months," she whispered.

"I've been here seven months."

Mark stumbled back.

"That's not possible."

"She told me you signed the divorce papers." Lucy's voice cracked.

"She said you didn't want me anymore.

That Jack didn't ask about me."

Jack threw his arms around his mother and started to sob.

Mark turned to Diane.

His voice was low and strange.

"What did you do?"

Diane didn't answer.

She was already moving toward the back door.

Mark grabbed her arm.

"Where are the papers?

The ones you made her sign."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"She signed something.

I can see it in your face."

Lucy lifted her head.

Her hands were still shaking, but her voice steadied.

"She made me sign the house over to her.

She said if I didn't, she would make sure I never saw Jack again." She looked at her son.

"I thought signing it would keep you safe."

The room went silent.

Then Jack reached into Diane's coat pocket — the one she'd been pressing her hand against since the freezer opened.

He pulled out a folded document.

Diane lunged for it.

Mark held her back.

Jack unfolded the paper.

His face changed when he saw his mother's signature at the bottom — and the date.

Three days after Lucy had "disappeared."
