Chapter 2: The Wrong Nurse

Part 2 ⬇️
The nurse didn't raise her voice.
That was the part that scared me most.
She looked directly at Margot and said, "I need you to step back from that bassinet.
Right now."
Margot blinked.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
Tom finally looked up from the floor.
"She didn't mean anything by it — she's just excited about—"
"Sir." The nurse didn't even turn toward him.
"I'm not talking to you."
Margot straightened.
"Do you know who my family is in this town?"
The nurse picked up my daughter's chart from the end of the bassinet.
She flipped it open.
Read something.
Then she looked back up.
"I know who she is," she said.
"And I know what I just witnessed."
The room went completely still.
My father-in-law stopped smiling.
Margot's face shifted — not into guilt, but into something colder.
Calculation.
"Tom," she said quietly.
"Handle this."
Tom opened his mouth.
But the nurse was already walking toward the door.
And she wasn't leaving.
She was holding it open for someone standing just outside in the hallway.
I couldn't see who it was.
But Margot could.
And her face went white.
---
What the nurse had already reported — and who was standing in that hallway — changes everything.
