Chapter 1: The Roses on Her Lawn

"Does your MOTHER know WHAT YOU DID?" My 15-year-old borrowed $40 from me to buy his first girl flowers — She threw them back at him WHILE I WATCHED from the car.
My son borrowed $40 from me to buy roses for a girl he'd loved in SECRET for a year.
Her name is Chloe.
Our families have known each other for eleven years…
Her mother and I share a beach house every August; our kids have been in the same class since second grade, and I have a photo of the two of them at six years old in matching swim goggles.
A whole year of him loving her, and he'd NEVER said one word about it.
I drove him to the florist myself.
He picked red roses.
He counted the two twenties out onto the counter and made me promise I'd wait in the car.
On the way there, he wouldn't stop talking.
Her laugh.
The way she stays after class to help their teacher stack chairs.
I parked across the street and watched him walk up to the porch holding the bouquet against him like something fragile.
The DOOR OPENED.
Chloe glanced at the roses.
Then at him.
She didn't take them.
She shoved them back into his chest hard enough that he stepped backward off the step, and I heard her voice across the whole street: "After what you did?
Does your MOTHER know what you did?"
The door slammed.
The roses stayed on her lawn where they'd landed.
And in that moment I understood that my son had been lying to me for months.
Whatever he did, whatever it costs me, I'm going to find out the TRUTH — Then Leo turned around and started walking back toward the car.
