Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Party

Grant lowered his voice.
“Apologize to Madison.
Now.”
Claire’s hands went cold.
“For asking her not to call me a maid?”
Madison gave a little shrug.
“If you don’t like being treated like one, stop acting like one.”
A few guests looked away.
Grant did not.
“She’s sixteen, Claire.
You’re making a scene.”
“No,” Claire replied.
“Your daughter humiliated me, and you’re blaming me for refusing to smile through it.”
Grant’s face hardened.
“Go inside before you embarrass this family any further.”
Claire slowly removed her apron and placed it on the table.
Madison smiled.
“You heard him, maid.”
Grant still did not correct her.
Then Susan stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
Madison’s smile vanished.
Susan held up her phone.
“I started recording when Madison pointed her finger at Claire.
But that isn’t the worst part.”
“What are you talking about?” Grant demanded.
Susan glanced at Madison’s two friends.
One of them had gone pale.
The girl swallowed hard.
“Mr.
Parker, Madison told us what you planned to do to Claire after the party.”
Grant froze.
Claire turned toward him.
“What plan?”
Susan tapped the screen—and Grant lunged for the phone.
