Chapter 1: The Glass That Never Landed

"Do you know who owns this place?"

The glass never made it.

Tucker Nall had her wrist eight inches from the end of its arc.

Twenty-three years old, second week on the floor, and he had moved without deciding to.

Odis Brandt was on one knee twelve feet away with a mop handle in both hands.

Seventy-four.

Nineteen years in that lobby.

Nobody in the building knew his last name.

He had not looked up.

He had gone very still, the way you do when you have been through this before.

Sabine Whitlock pulled against the guard's grip and her heel skidded on the wet marble.

Twenty-nine, in a silver dress, loud enough for the mezzanine to hear her.

Wine spilled out of the glass and across the floor in a long arc.

"Get your hands off me."

"Ma'am.

Put the glass down."

Nine people in that lobby had stopped moving.

A man near the desk had a phone up and had not turned the flash off.

Behind Sabine Whitlock, the elevator opened.

Cordell Vane stepped out of it in a gray suit with a folder under his arm.

Fifty-eight, and he had built the company that owned the ground she was standing on.

He did not look at her.

He did not look at the old man on the floor either.

He stopped six feet away and looked at the guard holding her wrist.

He looked at him for a long time.

"Son.

What is your name?"
