Chapter 2: The Bottle With My Name On It

Grace's hand flew to her mouth.
For a moment she just stood there, shaking.
"You're awake," she whispered.
"You've been awake this whole time."
"Every minute," I said.
"And I need you to listen carefully."
She crossed the room and turned the lock.
Her hands wouldn't stop trembling.
I kept my voice low.
"How many times has Veronica been here without the nurses present?"
Grace hesitated.
"Four times.
Maybe five." She glanced at the door.
"Last night she brought a man I didn't recognize.
He wasn't a doctor.
He stood over your bed for a long time and didn't say anything."
Something cold moved through my chest.
"Did you hear a name?"
Grace nodded slowly.
"She called him Roland.
And she said…" Grace stopped.
"Say it."
"She said, 'Make sure it looks natural.'"
The room went very quiet.
I reached for her wrist.
"Grace.
I need you to go to the nurses' station and ask for Dr.
Haan — only Dr.
Haan — and tell him the word 'Castello.' He'll know what it means."
She was already moving toward the door when she stopped.
On the chair beside the window sat Veronica's handbag.
She must have left it behind.
And it was open.
Grace looked back at me.
Inside the bag, visible from across the room, was a small orange prescription bottle — with my name printed on the label.
