Chapter 2: What She Signed Without Reading

I didn't sleep that night.
Daniel kept the bag beside him on the floor.
When I woke at 3am, his hand was resting on top of it.
In the morning, he left for work early.
Too early.
I called my friend Diane, a paralegal who had helped me with paperwork before.
"Diane, if someone was collecting regular payments from a spouse — documented, monthly, exact amounts — what could that mean legally?"
A pause.
"It could mean a lot of things, Clara.
Debt repayment.
A loan agreement.
Or…" She stopped.
"Or what?"
"A signed arrangement.
Something that looked voluntary."
My stomach dropped.
"What if the person didn't know they had signed anything?"
Another pause.
Longer this time.
"Then someone needs to look very carefully at what they signed when they got married."
I sat down on the kitchen floor.
I thought about the paperwork Daniel had handed me the week before our wedding.
Pages I had skimmed because I trusted him.
Pages he said were standard.
I thought about the folder.
TERESA.
I called Diane back.
"I need you to look at my marriage documents."
She went quiet for a moment.
Then she said, "Clara.
Bring everything."
