Chapter 2: What the Corridor Heard

Daniel had stopped talking.
Which meant he had heard her.
The office door swung open.
Daniel stood in the doorway, his face white.
His eyes went straight to Elena.
Then to Adrien behind her.
"How long have you been standing there?"
Elena didn't answer.
"Elena.
How long?"
"Long enough."
Daniel stepped forward.
His voice dropped to something close to a hiss.
"You need to leave.
Right now.
Both of you."
Adrien didn't move.
"This is my house, Carter."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
He looked back at Elena.
"Whatever you think you heard—"
"An account," Elena said quietly.
"In my name.
That I didn't open."
Daniel said nothing.
"How much?" she asked.
Still nothing.
"Daniel.
How much is in it?"
Vanessa appeared in the doorway behind him.
Her face had gone still in a way that looked practiced.
Controlled.
Like someone who had prepared for this moment.
That frightened Elena more than anything Daniel had said.
Adrien spoke first.
"Marcus."
His lieutenant appeared at the end of the corridor.
"Pull everything we have on Carter's accounts.
Tonight."
Daniel took one step forward.
"You have no right—"
"I have every right." Adrien's voice didn't rise.
It didn't need to.
"You moved money through companies I own.
You used your wife's name to do it.
And you left her outside in the cold so she wouldn't find out."
The corridor went completely silent.
Elena looked at her husband.
Eight years.
And he couldn't meet her eyes.
