Chapter 1: The Recording

Daniel thought he was prepared for whatever the camera had captured.
He wasn't.
The recording began shortly after lunch, with nothing more alarming than an ordinary family kitchen on an ordinary afternoon.
Emma entered first.
The young blonde girl carried a small mixing bowl against her chest, her hair falling loosely over her shoulders as she walked toward the kitchen island.
A few seconds later, Victoria followed her inside.
At first, nothing seemed wrong.
Emma placed the bowl beside the island and looked toward several baking trays spread across the counter.
Victoria stepped closer and pointed toward them, apparently giving her instructions.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
There was no clear audio.
The camera had captured the entire kitchen, but whatever words were being exchanged were reduced to muffled sounds.
Still, Daniel didn't need sound to realize the atmosphere was changing.
Emma's expression shifted.
The relaxed look disappeared from her face.
Her shoulders tightened.
Victoria pointed toward the counter again.
Emma shook her head.
Victoria said something else.
Emma shook her head more firmly.
Then Victoria stepped closer.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
On the screen, Emma's lips were moving quickly now.
She seemed to be explaining something, perhaps defending herself, but Victoria wouldn't back away.
She pointed toward the baking trays.
Then toward Emma.
Then back toward the counter.
Emma lowered her eyes.
Victoria continued talking.
The girl slowly shook her head again.
And then Emma began to cry.
Daniel froze.
The tears weren't subtle.
Emma wiped at her cheeks with the back of one hand, but more tears followed.
Her mouth trembled as she tried to answer Victoria.
Victoria didn't appear moved.
She kept talking.
Emma stepped backward.
Victoria followed.
Daniel paused the video.
The kitchen suddenly became unbearably quiet.
He stared at the frozen image of his daughter crying.
Then he slowly turned toward his wife.
"What were you saying to her?"
Victoria crossed her arms.
"You're making this look worse than it was."
Daniel looked back at the screen.
"She's crying."
"Children cry, Daniel."
"Emma doesn't cry like that over nothing."
Victoria exhaled sharply.
"She was being difficult."
"Difficult about what?"
"She wouldn't listen to me."
Daniel stared at her for several seconds.
Then he turned back toward the laptop.
"Let's keep watching."
Victoria's face changed.
"Daniel, there's no reason to—"
He pressed play.
The recording continued.
Emma was still crying.
Victoria moved closer and appeared to say something directly into the girl's face.
Emma tried to step around the kitchen island.
Victoria blocked her path.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Then Emma pointed toward the doorway.
Victoria shook her head.
Emma tried to move past her again.
This time Victoria reached toward her.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Her hand caught Emma's blonde hair.
Emma's head jerked backward.
The mixing bowl slipped from her hands and struck the counter before dropping out of view.
Emma immediately grabbed at Victoria's wrist, crying harder as Victoria held onto her hair.
Daniel shot to his feet so quickly that his chair scraped violently across the floor.
"What the hell is this?"
Victoria stood too.
"Daniel, listen to me—"
"You're holding her by the hair!"
"It wasn't what it looks like!"
Daniel pointed at the frozen screen.
"Then tell me what I'm looking at!"
Victoria's face had gone pale.
"She was trying to run away while I was talking to her."
"So you grabbed her?"
"I was stopping her!"
"By her hair?"
Victoria opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Daniel looked back at the recording.
His hand trembled as he pressed play again.
Emma twisted away.
Victoria still had one hand tangled in the girl's blonde hair.
Emma's face was wet with tears.
She was visibly terrified now.
Then something happened at the edge of the camera frame.
The kitchen door flew open.
Daniel appeared in the recording.
He had apparently heard the commotion from another part of the house.
He rushed into the kitchen and stopped dead when he saw Victoria holding Emma.
Even without clear audio, the change was immediate.
Daniel shouted something.
Victoria released Emma's hair.
Emma stumbled toward her father, sobbing.
Daniel moved between them.
Victoria pointed angrily toward Emma.
Daniel pointed back at Victoria.
The argument escalated within seconds.
Victoria's face twisted with frustration as she gestured toward the counter, then toward Emma, apparently trying to explain herself.
But Daniel wasn't listening anymore.
He turned toward his daughter.
Emma was clutching the back of her head.
Daniel crouched beside her and asked something.
Emma looked at him through tears.
Then she pointed toward Victoria.
And said something.
Something that made the Daniel watching the recording suddenly go completely still.
Because the Daniel inside the recording had reacted the exact same way.
He slowly stood.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Not anger.
Shock.
He turned toward Victoria.
Victoria immediately shook her head.
Daniel said something.
She shook her head again.
Then Emma spoke once more.
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
Daniel moved between them.
The argument exploded.
"What did Emma tell me?" Daniel asked quietly, staring at the screen.
Victoria said nothing.
He turned toward her.
"What did she say?"
"Daniel..."
"What did our daughter tell me in that kitchen?"
Victoria's eyes filled with panic.
"You're taking this completely out of context."
"Then give me the context."
She looked away.
Daniel returned to the recording and moved the cursor forward.
"No!" Victoria suddenly shouted.
Daniel stopped.
Her reaction told him everything he needed to know.
There was something else on that recording.
Something she desperately didn't want him to see.
Daniel stared at his wife, then slowly pressed play.
Victoria lunged toward the laptop.
"TURN IT OFF!"
But Daniel pulled it away.
On the screen, Emma pointed toward the hallway and said something else.
Daniel watched his own recorded face turn white.
Then he heard Victoria whisper behind him:
"If you watch the next part, our family is finished."
