Daniel pulled Lily close and wiped the frosting from her face, his hands shaking.
Around them, the ballroom had gone silent.
Two hundred guests stood frozen, watching.
Claire didn't move.
She just smiled.
"It was an accident," she said.
"You're so dramatic, Daniel.
Just like your father."
Daniel looked up slowly.
"What did you just say?"
Claire's smile didn't waver.
"I said — just like your father."
That was when Derek stepped forward and placed a hand on Claire's arm.
Not to stop her.
To steady her.
Like they had rehearsed this.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
He had known Derek for fifteen years.
He had never once seen him touch Claire like that.
Before he could speak, his phone buzzed in his pocket.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then it buzzed again.
He stepped away from the crowd and answered.
A man's voice, low and careful: "Mr.
Stallone.
Don't react.
Just listen.
What happened tonight was not about the little girl.
It was never about the little girl.
Ask Claire about the documents your father signed in 1987.
Then ask her why Michael's name was removed from all of them."
The line went d\*ad.
Daniel turned back toward the ballroom.
Claire was watching him from across the room.
Still smiling.
But her eyes had changed.
She knew he had just answered that call.
