Chapter 2: What Rosa Found in the Quiet House

While Sophie slept in the hospital bed, her grandmother — Alejandro's mother, Rosa — drove straight to the house.
She had raised two children alone.
She knew when something was wrong.
And something had been wrong for weeks.
She let herself in with her spare key.
The house was quiet.
Valerie was still at the hospital, playing the worried stepmother.
Rosa went straight to Sophie's room.
She found the tablet on the nightstand.
Sophie used it to watch cartoons.
But when Rosa picked it up, the screen was still open on something else entirely.
A search history.
Someone had been using Sophie's tablet to look up things no child would ever search for.
"How long does it take for a child to get pneumonia."
"What happens if a child misses antibiotics for two weeks."
"Symptoms of chronic low-grade poisoning in children."
Rosa's hands went cold.
She set the tablet down and walked to the medicine cabinet in the hallway.
She opened it slowly.
The prescription bottle from Dr.
Harris was there.
Still sealed.
Still full.
Sophie had never received a single dose.
Rosa called Alejandro immediately.
"Son," she said, her voice barely steady.
"She never gave Sophie the medicine.
Not once."
The line went silent.
Then Rosa opened the cabinet one shelf higher — and found something that made her stop breathing completely.
---
What Rosa found on that top shelf changed everything.
