Chapter 1: The Seven Words That Stopped His Heart

"Daddy…
Noah's cold under the house."
Daniel Carter had heard terrifying words before, but nothing had ever stopped his heart quite like those seven.
He turned slowly.
Five-year-old Lily stood barefoot at the edge of the living room, clutching her missing brother's blue dinosaur hoodie against her chest.
Her cheeks were wet with tears, yet she wasn't looking at Daniel.
She was staring at the Persian rug.
Across the room, Daniel's older sister, Vivian, smiled.
Too quickly.
Too perfectly.
"Children say strange things when they're frightened," she said gently.
"Especially when they want attention."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
Noah had been missing for six hours.
Six endless hours since Daniel and his wife, Elena, had left their children with Vivian while they met with a lawyer about Daniel's late father's estate.
Six hours since their seven-year-old son had somehow vanished from the newly remodeled mansion Vivian had practically begged them to buy.
Police had searched the neighborhood.
Daniel had walked every street, calling Noah's name until his throat burned.
Elena had called every parent, teacher, neighbor, and friend they knew.
Nothing.
No witnesses.
No sign of Noah.
Now Lily lifted one trembling finger.
And pointed directly at the rug.
"I heard him, Daddy."
Vivian's smile tightened.
"Daniel, don't encourage this."
But Daniel was already crossing the room.
Something about the rug suddenly bothered him.
Three days earlier, Vivian had delivered the expensive red-and-gold Persian rug as a "housewarming apology" after months of tension between them.
At the time, Daniel had barely thought about it.
Now he did.
The rug was enormous.
And strangely heavy.
Daniel knelt and reached for one corner.
"Don't."
Vivian's voice cracked through the room so sharply that everyone froze.
Elena turned toward her.
"Why not?"
For one fleeting second, Vivian's face changed.
The polished confidence disappeared.
Daniel saw something underneath it.
Fear.
Then Vivian recovered.
"The floor was just finished," she said quickly.
"You'll scratch it."
Daniel stared at his sister.
Her platinum-blonde hair was immaculate.
Her white designer dress looked untouched despite the frantic search for Noah.
Diamonds glittered around her throat.
Diamonds.
Vivian had spent years telling the family she was broke.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
She had always called him soft.
Sentimental.
Too trusting.
He was the brother who signed documents because family asked him to.
The brother who believed apologies.
The brother who never questioned why Vivian had been so interested in their father's estate.
But Vivian had made one mistake.
She had mistaken silence for weakness.
Daniel gripped the rug.
"Daniel," Vivian warned.
He pulled.
The rug dragged across the floor with a heavy scrape.
Elena gasped.
The floorboards underneath were lighter than the surrounding hardwood.
Freshly installed.
A thin seam ran beside the wall.
Daniel's pulse thundered.
"Those weren't there before," Elena whispered.
Vivian stepped closer.
"You're imagining things."
Daniel ignored her.
Then he noticed something caught inside the narrow gap between two boards.
Something tiny.
Pale.
He leaned closer.
His breath stopped.
A child's fingernail.
Elena screamed.
Lily buried her face against the dinosaur hoodie.
Vivian rushed forward.
"That could be anything!"
Daniel rose slowly.
He pulled out his phone.
Vivian's eyes widened.
Without taking his gaze off her, Daniel pressed record.
"You're right," he whispered.
"It could."
The room became impossibly quiet.
Then Lily lifted her head.
"Daddy…"
Daniel raised one hand.
Everyone stopped moving.
Because somewhere beneath the newly installed floorboards came a sound.
Knock.
Daniel's face went white.
Knock.
Elena grabbed his arm.
And then—
Knock.
Three faint knocks.
From directly beneath their feet.
"Noah?" Daniel whispered.
A muffled sound answered him.
Vivian suddenly lunged toward the front door.
Daniel spun around—
And that was when Elena noticed the small brass latch hidden beneath the edge of the floorboard.
A latch that could only have been installed from inside the house.
---
What did Vivian do — and why?
Daniel has his phone recording and she's running.
