Chapter 2: The Paper on the Table

Daniel turned the photograph over and over in his hands.

The handwriting was careful.

Deliberate.

Someone had written those words knowing exactly what they meant.

He walked to the hallway.

Vanessa was standing near the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, watching him.

"You want to explain this?" Daniel held up the photo.

She didn't flinch.

"I think you already know what it means."

"Vanessa.

My daughter is six years old."

"Then maybe it's time you started asking the right questions." Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"About that night.

About the accident."

Daniel went still.

"What accident?"

Vanessa looked at him for a long moment.

"You really don't know." It wasn't a question.

It was almost a whisper.

"They never told you."

"Who never told me what?"

She reached into her jacket pocket and placed something on the table between them.

It was a folded piece of paper.

Official looking.

A date printed at the top — the same night Daniel's wife d*ed.

"Read it," Vanessa said quietly.

"All of it."

Daniel's hand moved toward the paper.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was his wife's mother.

What's written on that paper — and why is she calling right now?

The truth Daniel uncovers next will shatter everything he believed.
