Chapter 1: The Face She Came Home With

"Dad's new wife gave me the money." My 16-year-old got lip fillers behind my back — I called my ex ready to scream, and he only said: "Wait for me."

My daughter came home on Saturday with a different face.

Sixteen years old.

In through the garage, hood up, chin down, straight for the stairs.

"Zoe.

Look at me."

She turned around.

I don't know how to explain what that does to you.

Your own kid's face, rearranged.

Swollen at the corners.

Shiny.

Wrong in a way I couldn't stop looking at.

"Who took you?"

"It's not a big deal, Mom, everyone gets —"

"Who took you?"

She looked at the floor for a long time.

"Dad's new wife gave me the money."

Miranda is twenty-nine.

She's been in my daughter's life for fourteen months.

In fourteen months she has never once texted me about a doctor's appointment, a school form, a permission slip.

Nothing.

And she took my sixteen-year-old to a clinic and paid cash for a needle in her face.

I stepped out to the driveway to call Mark.

My hands were shaking so much I dropped the phone twice.

I had it all ready.

Fourteen months of it.

I was going to say the word lawyer and I was going to enjoy saying it.

He picked up on the second ring.

I got about nine words out.

Then he said, "Are you home?

Is Zoe with you?"

"Mark, I swear to God—"

"I'm five minutes away.

Please don't do anything until I get there."

He was there in four.
