Chapter 2: The Medals He Had Never Seen Before

The helicopters touched down in the parking lot of the Oak Haven Sheriff's Department like they owned it.

Deputy Toby Miller pressed himself against the wall.

"Boyd…

what did you do?"

Boyd said nothing.

His face had gone the color of old concrete.

The front door opened before anyone knocked.

Two men in dark suits entered first.

Behind them walked a uniformed officer whose chest carried more medals than Boyd had seen in his entire career.

"General Reed," Sarah said calmly from behind the cell bars.

"I apologize for the inconvenience."

"Don't." General Reed's voice was quiet and absolute.

"Not another word of apology from you."

He turned and looked at Boyd the way a man looks at something he has already decided to remove.

"Unlock that cell.

Now."

Boyd's hand shook as he reached for the keys.

One of the suited men stepped forward and placed a single document on the booking desk.

"Sheriff Cleary.

You are hereby under federal review for unlawful detention of a senior defense official, interference with classified government equipment, and civil rights violations."

Boyd stared at the paper.

Then he looked at Sarah — really looked at her — for the first time.

She was already straightening her jacket.

"I did warn you," she said quietly.

But what no one in that room knew yet was what Sarah had been carrying in that car.

And why she had been driving through Oak Haven in the first place.
