Chapter 2: The Ring That Was Never Hers to Touch

"And?"

That one word.

Said to me like I was the unreasonable one.

Like I was the problem standing between him and a perfectly normal morning.

I looked at Savannah.

Still in my dress.

Still waiting for Ethan to fix it.

Then I saw it.

My grandmother's ring.

The antique pearl and diamond band my father had placed in my hands the night before.

The one that had been in our family for sixty years.

The one I had set on the vanity table before stepping out to speak with the florist.

It was on Savannah's finger.

"Take.

It.

Off."

Savannah's eyes filled immediately.

"Claire, I was just trying it on—"

"That ring belonged to my grandmother.

Take it off right now."

Ethan stepped between us.

"She didn't mean anything by it.

You were gone for twenty minutes."

I couldn't breathe.

"You're defending this."

"I'm asking you to calm down."

"She is wearing my dress and my grandmother's ring on the morning of our wedding and you are asking me to calm down."

Diane spoke from the corner, her voice careful and quiet.

"Claire, you're going to upset yourself before you even get to the altar."

I turned and looked at her.

She was still holding her phone.

The camera was still facing me.

She had been filming the whole thing.
