I Overheard My Husband and His Grandfather Talking About My Sister's 'Incredible Body' — What They Said Next Divided My Life Into Before And After
My name is Vanessa, and my sister Claire came to stay with us for two weeks while she searched for her own apartment.
My husband Ryan has always gotten along with her, maybe a little too well for my taste, but I never had a real reason to say anything.
Last Sunday, his grandfather came over for dinner, the way he does most weekends.
After we cleared the table, I went to grab another bottle of wine from the garage fridge, and on my way back, I heard their voices through the half-closed kitchen door.
"She's got an incredible body," his grandfather said, low, like he didn't want it to carry through the house.
"I mean it.
You're a lucky man."
I froze in the hallway, the wine bottle suddenly heavy in my hand.
Ryan laughed, quiet and a little embarrassed.
"I know, Grandpa.
I tell her that all the time."
I stood there, my heart pounding, waiting for either of them to say a name, because in my head, I was already certain they meant Claire.
Neither of them did.
Not yet.
"Come here a second," Ryan said instead.
"If you promise not to tell anyone, I've got a video I want to show you."
He said it with a smile in his voice, and I heard the soft little buzz of his phone unlocking.
