Chapter 2: Two Hundred and Fourteen Pages

Part 2 ⬇️

The tapping stopped.

The ballroom did not.

Victoria was still smiling when the double doors at the far end opened.

Not staff.

Not security.

A man in a dark suit walked in carrying a leather folder.

Behind him, two more.

They moved without hurrying, which was somehow worse than if they had run.

"What is this?" Graham said.

Nobody answered him.

The man in the dark suit stopped beside my wheelchair and placed the folder on the table next to me without a word.

I didn't open it.

I didn't need to.

I had signed those papers three weeks ago.

Victoria's smile flickered.

"Graham." Her voice dropped.

"Who are these men?"

Graham looked at me for the first time since I had arrived.

Really looked.

"Eleanor — what did you do?"

I held his gaze with the one side of my face that still moved.

"What you forgot I could," I said quietly.

Then Savannah stepped forward, her veil catching the chandelier light, and she said four words that made Victoria go completely still.

"Mother.

They have everything."

The folder on the table held 214 pages.

Victoria's hand was shaking when she reached for her phone — and found it already dead.

What was inside those 214 pages — and why did Savannah warn her own mother instead of defending her?
