Chapter 2: Her Eyes Were Empty

Part 2 ⬇️

The officer caught me before my knees hit the floor.

Inside the package was a photograph.

Cynthia.

My Cynthia.

Sitting at a table I didn't recognize, holding a handwritten sign against her chest.

The sign said: *I'm okay.

Don't look for me.*

Her handwriting.

Her face.

But her eyes were empty in a way I had never seen before.

"Ma'am, we need you to stay calm," the officer said.

I couldn't speak.

My phone was still connected.

Gary was still on the line.

I could hear him breathing.

"Gary." My voice came out barely above a whisper.

"Where is she?"

Silence.

Then: "I was protecting her.

You have to believe me.

I was protecting her from YOU."

The officer took the phone from my hand before I could respond.

Two more officers appeared.

One of them was already on his radio.

Another was photographing the contents of the suitcase.

There was more inside.

Not just the photograph.

There were folded papers beneath it.

Documents.

And a small key taped to the back of Cynthia's photo with a strip of the same silver duct tape.

One of the officers held up the papers and went very still.

He looked at his colleague.

Then he looked at me.

"Ma'am," he said carefully.

"Do you know someone named Dr.

Ellen Marsh?"

I had never heard that name in my life.

But Gary had said it once, in his sleep, eight months ago.

I'd forgotten until this exact second.
