Chapter 2: What Happened When No One Was Watching

Madison didn't wait for an answer.

She picked up one of the folded towels, dropped it on the floor, and walked out without looking back.

That was week one.

By week three, Clara had been docked pay for a broken vase she hadn't touched, reassigned to sleep in the basement storage room "to free up the cottage for guests," and told to keep Lily out of any room Madison might walk through.

"Children who belong to staff," Madison said one morning, loud enough for the kitchen to hear, "should not be seen in the main house.

It's not appropriate."

Clara said nothing.

She pressed her lips together and nodded.

But Lily was five.

She didn't understand invisible lines.

One afternoon, Lily wandered into the sitting room carrying a crayon drawing she had made for Ethan.

A yellow house.

Two stick figures.

A sun with eight careful lines.

Madison found her there.

Clara heard it from the hallway.

Not the words.

Just her daughter's cry — sharp and sudden — and then silence.

When Clara reached the room, Lily was standing against the wall, the drawing torn in half on the floor.

Madison was already gone.

That night, Clara held Lily until she stopped shaking.

She told herself she would leave.

She had told herself that before.

Then she noticed the bruise on Lily's wrist.

And she realized she wasn't the only one Madison had been h\*rting.
