Chapter 2: Before You. Our Son.

I told the dispatcher to stay on the line and set the phone on the counter.
I handed Noah to Lily.
"Hold him.
Don't move."
Then I grabbed the fireplace poker from the living room and walked toward the stairs.
Every step felt wrong.
The thumping had stopped.
That was worse.
I reached the top of the landing.
The white door at the end of the hall was still.
The brass knob caught the light.
I took three steps toward it.
Then it moved again.
One slow turn.
Left.
Then right.
Like someone testing it from the inside.
"Who's in there?" My voice came out steadier than I felt.
Silence.
Then a man's voice, low and careful: "Rachel?
That you?"
My jaw locked.
I reached the door.
Tried the knob.
Still locked.
"Rachel's not here," I said.
"I'm her husband."
A long pause.
Then: "She didn't tell you about me."
It wasn't a question.
"No," I said.
"She didn't."
Another pause.
Then something slid under the door.
A photograph.
I picked it up.
Rachel.
Smiling.
Standing beside a man I had never seen.
And she was holding a baby.
Not Noah.
A different baby.
On the back, in Rachel's handwriting, were four words:
*Before you.
Our son.*
My legs stopped working.
Downstairs, Lily called out softly: "Daddy…
he has a key."
