I read the note twice.

Then a third time.

Marlene had written my wife's doctor's name, her medication name, and the exact dosage.

But that wasn't what made my hands shake.

At the bottom, in Marlene's neat, careful handwriting, were seven words:

*"Double the evening dose.

She won't argue anymore."*

"Ethan, that is completely out of context—"

"Whose handwriting is this?"

She said nothing.

"Marlene.

Whose handwriting is this?"

"I was protecting my daughter." Her voice dropped, smooth and controlled.

"You have no idea what Carol has been doing.

The spending.

The calls.

She's not well, Ethan.

She needs more help than you're giving her."

Behind me, Lily made a small sound.

I turned.

She was staring at Marlene with something I'd never seen on my daughter's face before.

Not fear anymore.

Recognition.

"She called someone this morning," Lily said quietly.

"Before you woke up, Dad.

She was in the kitchen.

She said…

she said *'it's already done.'*"

Marlene's composure cracked — just for a second.

Just enough.

My phone was already in my hand.

I dialed the hospital.

It rang twice before a nurse answered.

"Yes, I'm calling about my wife.

Carol Whitaker.

She was admitted this morning—"

A pause.

"Sir…

your wife didn't come in voluntarily."
