Chapter 1: The Price of a Perfect Wedding

I paid for my stepdaughter's dream wedding.
During the reception, my six-year-old great-niece whispered, "Grandpa...
I heard Brianna say, 'He'll sign the papers tonight.'" Minutes later, the groom's father stepped toward me with a leather folder in his hand.
My name is Richard.
I'm 68.
Brianna was seven when I married her mother.
I never tried to replace her biological father.
I just made sure Brianna always knew she could count on me.
I taught her to ride a bike.
Sat through every school play.
Paid her college tuition.
When she needed her first car, I helped with that too.
Somewhere along the way, "stepdaughter" stopped feeling like the right word.
She was my daughter.
So when Brianna got engaged to Evan and told me she'd always dreamed of a vineyard wedding, I wanted to give her one.
The venue.
The flowers.
The orchestra.
Even the designer dress she'd fallen in love with.
My accountant warned me I was spending too much.
I didn't care.
"You only get one chance to give your daughter the perfect wedding."
That afternoon, I walked Brianna down the aisle with tears in my eyes.
A few hours later, during the reception, my six-year-old great-niece Poppy tugged on my jacket.
"Grandpa, I need to tell you something."
She glanced around before leaning closer.
"I heard Brianna talking about you before the wedding."
"What did she say?"
Poppy lowered her voice.
"She told Evan and his parents, 'He'll sign the papers tonight.'"
My stomach tightened.
"What papers?"
"I don't know."
I looked across the room at Brianna.
She was laughing with her new husband as if nothing were wrong.
I told myself Poppy must have misunderstood.
Then I noticed Evan's father walking toward me.
He wasn't smiling.
And under his arm was a thin leather folder.
Brianna appeared beside him.
"Dad," she said, taking my arm.
"Henry needs to speak with you privately."
I looked at the folder.
Then at my daughter.
And suddenly, Poppy's words didn't sound like something a six-year-old had misunderstood.
