Chapter 2: Something Shifted in His Face

I froze.

The man's voice was shaking.

His cart was tipped on its side three feet away, groceries scattered across the floor.

"I didn't do anything," he said quietly.

"I simply stood here."

"You — your cane — it was right there, I tripped over it and my—"

He stopped.

Looked around.

Then his face went white.

A woman was kneeling near the overturned cart, pressing a cloth to her knee.

A little girl stood beside her, crying.

"That's my wife," the man said, his voice dropping.

"She fell."

I looked at Grandpa.

He hadn't moved an inch from where I'd left him.

A store employee rushed over.

Then another.

And then a woman nearby — older, silver-haired — stepped forward and said firmly,

"I saw everything.

Your wife tripped on your own cart.

This gentleman never moved."

The man opened his mouth.

Closed it.

He looked at Grandpa.

Then at his wife.

Then back at Grandpa.

And in that moment, something shifted in his face that I had not expected to see.

What happened next — what that man said directly to Grandpa in front of everyone — I still think about it to this day.
