Chapter 2: The Phone in the Apron Pocket

Roberto didn't move.
Not yet.
He needed to hear it.
Every word.
Vanessa's voice dropped low — the kind of low that was somehow worse than shouting.
"You are a burden.
You have always been a burden.
And the sooner your father realizes that, the better for everyone in this house."
Sofía didn't cry.
That was the part that broke him.
She was seven years old, and she already knew how to go completely still when someone wanted to hurt her.
María slowly rose to her feet.
Her voice was quiet but steady.
"She is a child, ma'am."
"She is an inconvenience," Vanessa said.
"And so are you."
Roberto stepped into the room.
The dessert box was still in his hand.
Vanessa turned — and for one brief second, something crossed her face.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Calculation.
She opened her mouth to speak.
To explain.
To perform.
But Roberto wasn't looking at her anymore.
He was looking at Sofía — still frozen, still clutching that rabbit, her small face turned toward the sound of his footsteps.
"Papá?" she whispered.
He crossed the room and knelt beside her.
And that was when María did something unexpected.
She reached into her apron pocket and placed a small phone on the table beside him.
Her hands were shaking.
"Sir," she said softly.
"This wasn't the first time."
Vanessa's expression changed completely.
"Don't you dare—"
"There's a recording," María said.
The room went silent.
