Chapter 2: What She Pulled Out of the Bag

Part 2 ⬇️

---

The woman stared at me.

People were moving around us on the boardwalk but I couldn't hear any of it.

"I bought it," she said.

"At a thrift store.

Years ago."

"Which one?

Where?"

She took a step back.

"I don't remember.

It was years ago.

I'm sorry, I don't know what you want from me."

My hands were shaking.

I pointed at the keychain.

"That was hers since she was six years old.

A little silver moon.

You can see where the paint wore off the back."

She looked down slowly.

When she looked back up, something in her face had changed.

"There was a name," she said quietly.

"Inside the bag.

Written in marker on the lining."

I already knew what she was going to say.

"Rosie," I whispered.

She didn't answer right away.

She just looked at me the way people look at someone they're not sure how to help.

Then she said, "There was something else in the bag when I bought it.

I kept it because I didn't know what to do with it."

She reached into the bag.

What she pulled out made my legs stop working.

What was inside that bag — and what does it mean for Rosie?
